Recording Journal: Day 24 – Guitars, Piano

Hey guys!

Well, the filming of the first Lion Cub music video is now complete! We’d like to thank all our dear friends for coming and helping, and the following bands: Young Minds, Aeroplane, 1929, and Outsider Joe for lending us members of your ranks. The video will be up sooner than later.

After we cleaned up Chelsey’s folk’s house and rested up from a pretty serious party, Chelsey and I moved forward with recording. Yesterday was mainly a guitar day, and we are happy to say that my portion of the guitars are likely finished. I switched between using Trevor’s American Telecaster and my own ’72 Telecaster Thinline, running both into my Fender Hot Rod DeVille 410. For a couple songs I used the Boss DD6 Digital Delay, and miked all that with the Shure SM57. We used a nice big, hardwood floored room in the house for guitars, to give them a slightly wider sound than the previous guitar parts, all of which were recorded in various bedrooms.

After that we recorded a few atmospheric piano bits, using an old stand-up acoustic piano that was gathering dust in the house. Chelsey played those, and we once again miked it with the Shure SM 57, placing the mic under the piano, pointed up, to get the percussion of her hitting the keys as well as the notes themselves. It was out of tune, but beautiful in the context we used it in.
