Recording Journal: Day 9 – Guitars, Keyboards

Hey dudes!

Today was a really successful day of tracking. I started off by exporting a few organs and pianos I had done on GarageBand back when we were demoing the album that I liked the sound of. Geoff Emerick refers to this as “chasing the demo,” and that’s pretty much right. I dropped those into their respective songs and mixed and edited as needed.

After that I began tracking guitars for “Seymour”, one of my favorite songs from the album. I’ve been loving the clean sound on Trevor’s Marshall JCM 2000 DSL 201 tube amp so I went with that today, running my Fender ’72 Telecaster Thinline in, miking it from about two inches back with the Shure SM57. There is a lot of reverb on this song so I positioned the mic even further back for some of the higher lead parts that I wanted a lot of atmosphere on. After that I just worked on editing and compression for that song. I also added a few organ and piano tracks with the Alesis Micron. I haven’t started vocals yet but I’d say it’s about 60% finished. Here are the specifics:

“Summer Olympic”
Organ added, (GarageBand preset), completed

“Your Bronzed Apple”
Organ added, (GarageBand preset), completed

“Seymour”
Electric Piano added, (Garage Band preset), completed
Organ added, (Alesis Micron), completed
Electric Piano added (Alesis Micron) completed
Clean Guitar added (Fender ’72 Telecaster Thinline, Marshall JCM2000 DSL 201)
